Arte y Pasion – Sanctorum
April 24 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pmFree
San Antonio College presents Arte y Pasión SANCTORUM, a flamenco and Spanish dance project about finding a refuge to Dream. The project is created specifically for the Opening Ceremony of the Multicultural Conference of San Antonio College, whose theme is “300 Years of Encounters” and is designed for the internment of a musical time capsule. The musical time capsule marks San Antonio’s Tricentennial as the culmination of 300 years of history, to be interned and conserved for future excavation and discovery.
What will the world think of us in 300 years? When we are afraid, how can we dream? What we are seeing in our country has happened before. Designating a person as “illegal” simply for existing next to us has forced people into fear for who they are, their beliefs, or the color of their skin. It’s easy to get caught up reacting to the news rather than doing something. Instead of dreaming, we can live in a nightmare where the only outlet is violence. By reacting with more violence, we perpetuate the nightmare. Many of us don’t see dreaming as an option. But dreaming is our obligation. Our ancestors had dreams for us; we have seen that dreams can be plunged into darkness. But Love, Compassion, and dreaming is vital to preserve our humanity. In the threats we face, there are hidden gifts: through the candleflame of our own humanity and authenticity, we can come into our power. SANCTORUM reflects upon 300 years in all its human encounters in an étude of darkness and brilliance, triumph and tragedy.
Arte y Pasión, under artistic direction of Tamara Adira, is an award-winning San Antonio based interdisciplinary flamenco and artistic company comprised of Independent Artists accomplished in their own right. The project, curated by Claudio San Miguel, will feature Artist Foundation of San Antonio Award Winners and Makers and Creatives from San Antonio to Spain.
The Opening Ceremony and Performance will take place at the historic Scobee Education Center and Scobee Planetarium, on 1819 N. Main Ave, San Antonio, TX 78212, Tuesday April 24 at 6:30pm.
