The Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas presents Open Government Seminars throughout the state focusing on the Texas Public Information Act and Texas Open Meetings Act. The June 19 seminar takes place at San Antonio College in the Loftin Student Center (Fiesta Room) at 1300 San Pedro Ave. in San Antonio. The seminar is co-sponsored by the Journalism-Photography Program at San Antonio College.
The Texas Attorney General’s Office will present a free session on the Public Information Act and associated cost rules from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. The FOI Foundaton will present the Open Meetings Act session, which is also free, but optional donations are welcome. The Open Meetings Act session is from 11:30 to 12:45 p.m. Attendees are welcome to bring their own lunch. A food court is located nearby in the Loftin Student Center.
The final event of the day is the First Amendment Institute, a free two-hour training session from 1 p.m. to 3:15 p.m., designed for journalists and covering the basics of press freedom, libel and other timely First Amendment issues. Some travel scholarship funds may be available for journalists attending from out of town. Both the TPIA and Open Meetings Act sessions qualify for state-certified open government training for public officials, accredited through the Attorney General’s Office. Attorneys attending these two sessions can qualify for State Bar of Texas CLE credit. District and county clerks can qualify for state-certified training credits for clerks.
