A teacher was teaching mathematics to a child. She asked, “If i give you an orange and an orange and an orange to keep, then how many oranges will you have in your bag?”

Within moments child confidently replied, “Four.”

The teacher was disappointed because she was expecting the correct answer – Three.

She repeated the question: “If i give you an orange and an orange and an orange to keep then how many oranges will you have in your bag?”

Because child saw disappointment on his teacher’s face, she tried again, counting on her fingers and this time hesitatingly replied, “Four.”

The teacher remembered that girl loved strawberries. This time, with twinkling eyes teacher asked, “if i give you a strawberry and a strawberry and a strawberry to keep then how many strawberries will you have in your bag?”

The child counted again on her fingers, and replied, “Three!”

The teacher smiled: her new approach was successful.

Once again she asked girl, “Now tell me:  If i give you an orange and an orange and an orange to keep then how many oranges will you have in your bag?”

Seeing teacher happy, the girl immediately replied, “Four.”

Frustrated, so with a stern and irritated voice the teacher asked, “How! Tell me how?”

In a small voice  the girl replied, “Because i already have an orange in my bag.”
