Cultural Conversation on Race and Culture
September 9, 2016 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
FreeCommunity leaders continue conversations on race and culture
WHAT:
Continuing a community dialog that began in May to tackle intolerance and work towards unity, District 8 Councilman Ron Nirenberg and State Sen. José Menéndez will convene a Cultural Conversations event at the UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures.
Last year, San Antonio was rocked by a wave of hate crimes that targeted the Jewish community through vandalism. The attacks, which took place in several communities on San Antonio’s northwest side, alarmed civic and faith leaders but also quickly brought together neighbors who stood against the hate speech and stood together to celebrate diversity and champion unity.
Councilman Nirenberg and Sen. Menéndez began Cultural Conversations as a response to those events. Recently, they called upon the museum’s Texas Star Heritage Award recipients and other community leaders to facilitate conversations addressing recent racially motivated unrest and violence. The conversations are meant to break down barriers and strengthen relationships among people and communities, in turn, making San Antonio a better, more tolerant place.
Texas Star Heritage Award recipients include G.P. Singh of San Antonio’s Sikh community, Janie Barrera of LiftFund and board members from the Our Community, Inc. Group.
